On Tuesday, February 27, organizers of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg put media up to the ultimate challenge, the 2nd Annual Media Karting Competition.
Media organizations in St. Petersburg and the surrounding area were invited to Andersen RacePark in Palmetto for some fun and "friendly" competition. Each organization put together a team of up to 4 people and were paired up with a professional driver from one of the 6 series competing at the Honda Grand Prix on March 23-25.
This year's professional drivers participating in the media competition included Mario Andretti (IZOD IndyCar Series), Simon Pagenaud (IZOD IndyCar Series), Peter Dempsey (Firestone Indy Lights), Jacob Wilson (Firestone Indy Lights), Matthew Barbham (USF2000), Shannon McIntosh (USF2000), Spencer Pigot (USF2000), and Shea Holbrook (Pirelli World Challenge).
Before hitting the track, Jonny Baker (above) from Andersen RacePark briefed the 10 media teams competing on the rules of the road.
Media teams included the Tampa Bay Times, Bay News 9, ABC Action News, 10 News/Studio 10, SI.com, Autoracing1.com, Univision, Rocket Sports & Entertainment, Spirit 90.5 and WWPR 1490am Radio.
And then it was off to the races...
Though each of the 10 teams put forth a solid effort, only three teams could stand on the podium.
Coming in third place was team 10 News (pictured above), which had our very own Tim Ramsberger (right,VP & GM of the Honda Grand Prix).
Finishing second, was team Rocket Sports & Entertainment (above), led by Peter Dempsey of Firestone Indy Lights (right, in red).
And taking home top honors were the fierce competitors of team Autoracing1.com, led by Spencer Pigot of USF2000.
A big thanks to everyone that attended and a congrats to our 2012 Media Karting Competition winners. We look forward to seeing you at the 8th edition of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in a few short weeks!
