INDIANAPOLIS (November 16, 2012) - Adding to its 20-year tradition of offering decorative ornaments for the holiday season, CARA Charities is honored to debut a special additional ornament for 2012, presented by Susie Wheldon, along with her sons, Sebastian and Oliver.
The unique ornament features the “Lionheart”, a symbol that exemplifies the exceptional courage and bravery of the late Dan Wheldon, two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, who lost his life in a racing accident in 2011.
Tony Kanaan, a good friend of Dan, designed the traditional driver ornament for 2012, which was presented at the CARA Charities fashion show in May. The ornament displays Tony’s unique sense of fun and also includes a small Lionheart in tribute to Dan Wheldon.
"It was an honor for my children and I to design a special ornament for CARA in memory of their father and my late husband Dan,” Susie Wheldon said. “We made it through this last year with a tremendous amount of support from the racing community, and it was a privilege to be able to give back in a small way. Dan continues to shine and make an impact through the legacy he left behind, and I am grateful our children will have so many wonderful examples of how their father made a difference through his passion for life, his family and racing. We hope that everyone will enjoy this ornament as much as we enjoyed designing it."
CARA Charities has been featuring holiday ornaments designed by the drivers of open-wheel racing since 1992, when the first was designed by three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Johnny Rutherford. The CARA Charities line of holiday merchandise also includes a popular cookbook, featuring a collection of recipes from drivers, owners, and assorted VIPs of the racing world.
