HONDA GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG EXTENDS AGREEMENT WITH THE CITY
St. Petersburg, Fla. (April 30, 2007) - St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker announced today that the promoter of the Grand Prix has exercised its option to renew its race agreement for at least another two-year period.
In a letter received from Kevin Savoree, managing director of Andretti Green Promotions, the organizers of the successful Grand Prix racing event said, “we look forward to continuing our partnership with the city of St. Petersburg.”
“The Grand Prix is this city's signature event,” said Mayor Rick Baker, “and it has become one of the standout events of the IndyCar Series. We are delighted to welcome the return of the Grand Prix in 2008 and 2009, and look forward to many more great years of racing in St. Pete.”
Since the inaugural event in 2005, the Grand Prix has continued to grow. The race this year drew an estimated 125,000 race fans, and featured two internationally televised races - the American Le Mans Series - Acura Sports Car Challenge on Saturday, March 31, and the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg IndyCar Series race on Sunday, April 1.
An international field of elite race car drivers competed on a challenging downtown 1.8 mile, 14-turn race circuit that winds along St. Petersburg's downtown waterfront under sunny Florida skies. The city's backdrop for world-class racing events has earned it a reputation as the Monte Carlo of America.
It is anticipated that the Grand Prix will be held April 4 to 6, 2008.
